Candle Safety

Candle safety is easy and yet overlooked so often. Candles cause only 4 percent of most residential fires, but almost 20 percent of the injuries and deaths. How can you make candles in your home safer? Do not burn candles when you are not in the room. Don't ever use candles when you go to sleep. Keep all candles at least one foot away from flammable items like curtains and furniture. Remember that pets can tip them over when you are not watching. Do not use candles during power outages, rather use flashlights and battery powered lighting. Even safer are the battery powered candles. These can remain on whenever you would like and if tipped over doesn't present a fire hazard.
