Don't Become a Statistic!
Here are some interesting fire facts that hopefully will make you think how fire could dramatically change you and your family's lives.
In 2008, Hibbing Fire Department responded to 13 major structure fires, totaling over 1 million dollars in damages. Of those 13 fires, our department was able to confine 9 of them to the room of origin. These fires displaced 13 families and caused much turmoil in their lives. How can you avoid being one of these statistics?
First, and foremost, install smoke alarms. Change the batteries every year and replace smoke detectors no less than every 10 years. Do not take the batteries out unless you are replacing them. Test them monthly. They are inexpensive life insurance. Ask anyone of the victims we had last year how important a smoke alarm is.
Second, make sure you have a carbon monoxide alarm in your home on every level of the house. Replace these every seven years and change the batteries the same time you replace the batteries in your smoke alarms. These can also save your life.
Third, pay a visit to your fire station. We have many brochures and are always willing to discuss how you can prevent a fire in your home.
Fourth, if your civic or youth group would like a representative to come talk to your group about fire prevention, please call the fire department.
