Fire Prevention Week 2009

It seems like just yesterday that summer was here and now we are into fall. And, with the fall season comes October and Fire Prevention Week. Every year, during Fire Prevention Week, we head to the schools to talk fire safety or we have the school children come to the fire station. Our message over the years hasn't changed very much. We tell folks to check their smoke detectors, have a family escape plan, etc. etc.

I enjoy reading about fire departments that try different ideas during Fire Prevention Week. Those fire safety houses are a big hit and they can really drive home the point about fire safety. And, those houses are so versatile for demonstrations. I also like hearing about those departments that actually set up fire extinguisher training courses and let the kids put out the fire. I also like the idea which the Pike-Sandy-Britt Fire Department has been doing for years and that's its annual spaghetti feed. Fire Safety and food, what a great combination.

With another Fire Prevention Week upon us, let's remember that fire safety is a year round activity that goes beyond October. Fire nevers takes a break or a vacation and we must continue to be vigilant. Let's use Fire Prevention Week as a base for our activities and continue with our message all year. When you get right down to it, it really is a matter of life and death.
