Half Million Dollar Fire at Rural Palo Area Lumber Yard
April 30, 2009 — An early afternoon fire caused at least $500,000 in damages to the Hietala Lumber Company in the Palo area, south of Biwabik. Lakeland firefighters were called just before 12:30 p.m. The first arriving firefighters found that the company's main building had already collapsed and several piles of lumber were on fire. Mutual aid was provided by the Aurora, Palo, Biwabik Township and McKinley fire departments. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
