Helping Out In The Flood: Area Public Safety Personnel Answer The Call!
When the cry for help went out from the Red River Valley area, the Arrowhead Region's emergency responders answered the call. I know of several fire departments and ambulance services that went west to assist in the evacuation and disaster effort. I know that every one of these folks involved can take pride in what they have done. It once again says a lot about who were are and what we do...period.
However, this editorial is not aimed at those who went to help. This editorial is aimed at those who are now questioning and criticizing the response effort from the region. Coffee shop talk, which is always loaded with rumor, finger pointing and name calling, is notorious for its lack of information, which sadly, often becomes the "truth" in the eyes of some people.
For those concerned about their city's budgets, let's set the record straight. The crews and cities are receiving reimbursements for the use of vehicles and personnel. The Red River area was declared a national disaster area, which sets forth millions of dollars for the various efforts taking place.
Finally, let's talk about a concept a little more important than just money. It is called "helping your neighbor when disaster strikes." One of the great things about this country is that when someone is in trouble, we are always there to help. Whether it be an earthquake in China, a tidal wave in Indonesia, or a flood in the Red River Valley; Americans are ready to answer the call. We take pride and confidence in what we do. Even nations that don't like our politics will often times welcome our help when a natural disaster hits them.
So, to all emergency responders who went to the Red River Valley to help out, hold your heads up high! And, for those who criticize these true Americans, hang your heads in shame!
