Small Plane Crashes On Lake Vermilion

March 14, 2009 — EMS and fire personnel from Greenwood Township, along with members of the St. Louis County Volunteer Rescue Squad, responded to a report of a small plane crash on Pike Bay in Lake Vermilion. The incident was reported around 1:30 p.m. The pilot, 43 year old Thor Pakosz of Cook, received multiple injuries and was airlifted from the scene by a Lifelink helicopter and transported to St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. According to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Department, Pakosz was attempting to take off from the ice on the lake when the plane's engine stalled, sending the aircraft into a spin and it crashed. The accident remains under investigation by the FAA.
