Virginia Firefighter Loses Home

January 12, 2009 — An early afternoon fire in the South Grove Addition of Mountain Iron (8791 Arbor Lane) destroyed the home of Virginia firefighter/paramedic John Ditzler. The fire was initially reported as a garage fire at 12:36 p.m. and when crews arrived the fire had spread to the rest of the house. Ditzler, who was home at the time, managed to get out safely, but a family dog was lost in the fire. Damages were estimated around $170,000. The fire was fought by firefighters from Mountain Iron, Virginia and Eveleth. The fire may have started from faulty wiring, but an investigation into the cause is continuing.

A benefit fund to assist the Ditzler family has been established at the U.S. Bank in Virginia by the Virginia Firefighters' Auxiliary. Those wishing to donate can contact the bank at 218-742-3314. A future fundraiser for the family is also being planned.
