Cook Mourns "One of its Finest"
May 6, 2008 — The community of Cook remains in mourning over the loss of one of its treasures, Bill Fischer. Fischer, age 53, a member of the Cook Ambulance Service and Cook Fire Department, died unexpectedly on April 27 at North Memorial Hospital. In March, Fischer had his right hand severed in an industrial accident, but it was re-attached and he was on the long road to recovery. Sadly, he developed an infection which claimed his life.
Bill Fischer was a unique individual who really cared about his community. He spent countless hours dedicated to the ambulance service and fire department. He will be truly missed by all of us who knew him. His funeral on May 4 was certainly a celebration of his life and his dedication.
Bill's passing has left a huge hole in Cook's public safety umbrella. Perhaps a younger person who was touched by Bill's example of caring will "step up to the plate" and also encourage others to join the cause. In the end, I believe that the greatest tribute to Bill Fischer would be that the Cook Fire Department and Cook Ambulance Service gets new members who will carry forth his exemplary tradition of community and public service.
