Eveleth Warehouse Extensively Damaged: Blaze Determined to be Arson

April 27, 2007 — A late evening fire caused extensive damage to the Mahnich Distributing Company, 212 Jones Street in Eveleth. The fire was reported around 10:30 p.m. Firefighters from Eveleth and Fayal Township were the first to arrive at the scene and began an initial attack on the alley side area of the beer and ale warehouse.

The blaze had spread through the roof area of the building and several attempts were made to contain it. Mutual aid was called in from Mountain Iron, Gilbert, Virginia, Biwabik and McDavitt Township. Around 1:30 a.m., the decision was made to go "defensive" and aerial operations began with apparatus from Virginia and Gilbert. The warehouse section of the building was considered a total loss, with the rest of structure having extensive damage. No injuries were reported.

An investigation by the Eveleth Police Department, State Fire Marshal's Office and Eveleth Fire Department determined that the fire was arson. Several reward funds have been established. No damage estimate is available.
