Explosion Rips Through Aurora Wastewater Treatment Plant: No Injuries, but Unbelievable Damage

May 5, 2004 — An early afternoon explosion destroyed the control room of the Aurora wastewater treatment plant. The damage to building was described as "unbelievable." Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The blast was reported around 1:30 p.m. Fire and rescue personnel from Aurora and several other communities responded to the scene. The Chemical Assessment Team (CAT) from the Duluth Fire Department was also called to the plant to make sure dangerous chemicals were not leaking. State, federal and local authorities continue to assess the damages and are working to determine how the plant can be kept in operation.
