Wildland Fire Near Eveleth
September 5, 2006 — A wildland fire in the West Eveleth/City of Leonadis area consumed about 80 acres of forest and grass lands. The blaze was fought by the Mountain Iron, Eveleth, Virginia, Fayal Township and Clinton Township fire departments. Ground crews from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Forest Service were also called in, along with two Cl-215 water bombers. Fire crews were on the scene for over five hours. No structures were lost and no injuries were reported. The huge blaze was apparently caused by a passing train.
