Major Fire Hits Downtown Grand Rapids: Damages Estimated at $2 million
July 2, 2006 — A mid afternoon fire caused extensive damage to a historic downtown Grand Rapids building. The fire, at the corner of First Avenue N.W. and Highway 2, was reported around 2:30 p.m. The top floor of the building had major fire damage, while the rest of the structure had water damage. The building housed two businesses, Wings and Willows Art Gallery and the Soup to Nuts Gun Shop. A nearby building was also damaged. Assistant Grand Rapids Fire Chief Steve Flaherty told The Northland Fire Wire that damages were estimated around $2 million. Firefighters from Grand Rapids, Cohasset, Deer River, Coleraine, Bovey, Taconite, Marble, Calumet and Hill City battled the blaze for around seven hours. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
