Early Morning Fire Destroys Two Babbitt Businesses: Several Others Extensively Damaged
September 24, 2011 — An early morning fire has devastated the city of Babbitt. Babbitt firefighters were called shortly before 2:00 a.m. to a fire at Zup's Supermarket, located in the Babbitt Shopping Center. The blaze spread from the grocery store to the adjacent Babbitt Drug. Both the supermarket and the drug store are a total loss. Several businesses, including the Babbitt Weekly News, U.S. Bank, Kell's Kitchen, a laundromat and another business received extensive smoke and water damage. Nine fire departments were involved in battling the huge fire. Babbitt Mayor Glenn Anderson said the fire is "devastating to the city and the community." There have been no reports of any injuries. The cause is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office.
