Hovland FD Receives SAFER Grant

November 22, 2010 — The Hovland Fire Department, which serves a large area along the North Shore of Lake Superior in Cook County has been awarded a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant. The grant, in the amount of $28,000, is from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and will be used for the recruitment, training and support of new emergency personnel. Hovland fire officials are hoping to use the funding for the recruitment of younger firefighters, who can assist in the department's many emergency response activities. The department received a $46,000 grant earlier this year from DHS for the upgrading and purchasing of new equipment. The Hovland Fire Department has about two dozen members.
