Duluth Firefighters Called to Salvage Yard Fire

August 4, 2010 — Duluth firefighters battled a morning fire at Azcon Recycling, located in city's waterfront area. The fire was reported around 9:00 a.m. in a huge pile of refrigerators and other appliances. According to Duluth fire officials, hand lines were first used to control the fire until a master stream could be established. The fire, which produced a large cloud of black smoke, was brought under control several hours later. Fire crews kept the blaze contained to the huge pile of scrap. The U.S. Coast Guard was called in to monitor water run-off into the nearby harbor. The cause of the fire was undetermined. Damages were estimated around $5,000.
