New Mountain Iron Fire Chief Named
April 23, 2010 — Joe Buria, a 17 year member of the Mountain Iron Fire Department, has been selected as the department's new fire chief. Buria was put in the position following the city council's termination of longtime Fire Chief Tom Cvar, who served in the position for 25 years. Buria's appointment followed about a month of controversy which saw the resignation of several firefighters including Assistant Fire Chief Steve Norvitch. At one point, the fire department had been down to only 10 firefighters. Three of the members who previously resigned were rehired along with several new firefighters. According to the Mesabi Daily News, the fire department now has 19 members and is quickly rebuilding.
