Mt. Iron Apartment Building Damaged

December 2, 2009 — A fire in the Raintree West Apartments in Mountain Iron caused extensive damage to one apartment and resulted in the evacuation of the entire building. The Mountain Iron Fire Department was dispatched to a report a couch fire around 5:55 a.m. While the fire was initially knocked down by a resident with a fire extinguisher, crews found that the couch was still burning. Firefighters quickly controlled the fire and then began ventilating the apartment complex. The occupant of the apartment, 69 year old Carol Gruden, was taken to the Virginia Regional Medical Center where she was treated for smoke inhalation and then released. The Virginia, Eveleth and Fayal fire departments were also called to fire. The cause of the fire was determined to be a cigarette. Damages were estimated at $80,000.
