New Heavy Rescue Apparatus in Hibbing

The Hibbing Fire Department has a new heavy rescue rig (Rescue 1). The apparatus, which is stationed at the department's headquarters, was built by Custom Fire Apparatus of Osceola, Wisconsin. Rescue 1 has a 500 GPM pump and 400 gallon water tank mounted on an International Model 7400 chassis, powered by an International DT570 diesel engine. The rig carries a variety of rescue equipment including vehicle extrication tools, rope, water and ice rescue equipment and hazardous materials response equipment. In addition, Rescue 1 carries a cascade air system for on-scene breathing apparatus filling as well as advanced life support equipment. Fire department officials say the apparatus will respond to all vehicle accidents, structure fires, carbon monoxide calls and other rescue alarms. The cost of the new heavy rescue truck was put at $272,000. The rig went into service around Memorial Day.
