Ely home damaged, two treated

May 16-Two people were treated by Ely ambulance personnel for possible smoke inhalation as a result of an early morning house fire in Ely. The fire was reported around 4:30 a.m. at 463 11th Avenue East. Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the fire, which was contained to a utility room. Ely firefighters were assisted by crews from Morse-Fall Lake and Babbitt. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters respond to popular Iron Range restaurant

May 17 – Three Iron Range fire departments responded this afternoon to a report of a fire at a popular Gilbert restaurant. The Gilbert, Eveleth, and Fayal departments were dispatched around 3:30 to The Whistling Bird on Broadway Street. There was a small fire on an outside wall, which was extinguished by a passerby. Firefighters checked to make sure that the fire had not extended into the rest of the building. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Gilbert Police Department and the Gilbert Fire Department.

Virginia house fire remains under investigation

The Virginia Fire Department and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office are continuing the investigation into the cause of the April 21st fire which destroyed a southside Virginia home. The blaze in the 500 block of 8 1/2 Street South sent two people to Duluth area hospitals. Eleven fire departments were involved in fighting the fire.

Chisholm home and garage destroyed

May 6 – An early morning fire in Chisholm sent six people,including three children, to the Hibbing hospital for possible smoke inhalation. The blaze was reported around 5:30 a.m. at 3rd Avenue NW and 13th Street NW. Heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from the house when crews arrived. Chisholm, Hibbing, Buhl, and French Township fought the fire from a defensive mode. The fire spread to a nearby garage. Both the house and garage are considered a total loss. The Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office,Chisholm Fire Department, and Chisholm Police Department are investigating the cause of the fire. Chisholm Fire Chief Bob Brown said all of those taken to the hospital were treated and released.



Backhoe fire at Hibbing Taconite

April 19 – Firefighters from three Iron Range fire departments were paged this morning to a backhoe fire at Hibbing Taconite. The incident was reported around 10:15 a.m. The Hibbing Taconite Fire Brigade was able to bring the fire under control. The backhoe had extensive damage. No injuries were reported. Those departments dispatched to the fire included: Hibbing, Chisholm, and Town of French. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Late night chimney fire in downtown Hibbing

April 17 – Hibbing, Chisholm, and Keewatin firefighters were dispatched late tonight to a report of a fire in the 400 block of East Howard Street in downtown Hibbing. The incident was reported around 11:15 p.m. Arriving crews determined it was a chimney fire. No injuries were reported. The fire is being investigated by the Hibbing Fire Marshal’s Office.

Fire damages Virginia home

April 14-Firefighters from six Iron Range departments battled a large house fire in Virginia this afternoon. The blaze was reported shortly after 12:00 p.m. in the 1000 block of 6th Avenue North. The three story house was extensively damaged. No injuries were reported. Fire departments on the scene included: Virginia, Mountain Iron, Eveleth, Gilbert, Fayal Township, and Pike-Sandy-Britt. The Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting the Virginia Fire Department in determining the cause of the fire.

Early morning house fire in Hibbing

March 14- One person was treated for smoke inhalation as the result of an early morning house fire in Hibbing. The fire was reported around 5:00 a.m. in the 1900 block of 7th Avenue East. All of the occupants were able to safely evacuate the home. Firefighters from Hibbing, Chisholm, Keewatin, and Virginia were dispatched to the blaze. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fayal takes delivery of new water tender

The Fayal Fire Department took delivery today of its new water tender. The apparatus, which is on a 2018 International chassis, includes a 2,400 gallon tank with pump and roll capabilities. The water tender was built by Custom Fire Apparatus of Osceola, Wisconsin at a price tag of $256,000.

Hibbing house fire

February 18 – Hibbing and Keewatin firefighters were on the scene of a house fire in Hibbing this morning. The fire was reported around 7:00 a.m. in the 2100 block of 2nd Avenue West. The fire damaged a back porch, wall, and the attic area. All of the residents were able to safely exit the home. No injuries were reported. The Hibbing Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
