I love to write about positive things going on in the fire service. And, in the case of the Lakeland Fire Department, I really want to shout for joy. Sadly, in this world today, not a lot of things last very long. We all hear about those infamous Hollywood marriages. We are told products of all sorts don’t hold up like the “good old days.” Yet, in the Iron Range, there is a fire department which is half a century old. I don’t know about you, but to me that is a real accomplishment.
I have had the pleasure of meeting a lot of the Lakeland firefighters, including current Fire Chief Mike Plesha and some of the older, now retired firefighters. I know the less senior firefighters, too. Young or a little older, these people are very, very dedicated. Like all small fire departments, the Lakeland Department has had its fair share of growing pains. The firefighters, through their many talents, cobbled and put equipment together. When finances were good, they bought new equipment. And, they have come a very long way! Those shiny white and blue apparatus speak volumes about the dedication of this rural Minnesota fire department.
The Northland Fire Wire is very proud of the Lakeland Fire Department and its 50 years of service. Happy Birthday, Lakeland Fire Department! May you serve at least another 50 years!
